Net Market Share - Upgraded Methodology

Market share numbers are now weighted by country

In the past, we reported market share usage percentages based only on our raw numbers.  As of August 1st, we have implemented retroactive country-level weighting in our reports.  This means that we adjust our reports proportionally based on how much traffic we record from a country vs. how many internet users that country has.  For example, although we have significant data from China, it is relatively small compared to the number of internet users in China.  Therefore, we now weight Chinese traffic proportionally higher in our global reports.  This change produces a much more accurate view of worldwide usage share statistics.

After consulting with many of the organizations we report data on, we decided to use CIA data as the source of the number of internet users per country.

In addition to providing better share numbers, the reason we made this change was due to growing traffic imbalances in certain countries.  Some countries were growing traffic at a much higher pace than the rest of the world and it was creating unacceptable variances in the share numbers.  The reason we delayed June numbers was due to these imbalances.  From now on, a single high growth country will not be able to affect the global share numbers.

This change has produced some significant changes in usage share for various technologies.  The primary ones are:

Baidu - Baidu goes to 9% of global search engine usage.  Baidu is on a major growth curve, which is affecting the relative share of all other search engines.

Google - Because of Baidu's growth, Google's global share is actually going down.  This is almost completely due to Baidu and does not reflect the rest of the world.

Apple - Since Mac share in the U.S. in significantly higher than the rest of the world, Mac and Safari share drop in the global reports.

Opera - Opera goes up to 2% in global reports.  This reflects the significant share they have in Eastern Europe and Asia.

NOTE:
Trends from weighting by country remain intact. For example, while the baseline number our data sample showed was misrepresentative of Apple's true usage share due to strongly aligned client geolocations, Apple has sustained significant growth in OS and browser share over the last few years as we have reported.

And, while Opera's share of browser usage has remained fairly consistent, our data sample under-reported Opera's true usage share.

Weighting by country nearly eliminates the effects of the geolocation of our client websites, and provides a much more accurate representation of internet usage market share.

Baidu Overtakes Google in China

With our new country-level weighting, we get a better view of the growth rate of Chinese search engine Baidu.  Baidu has reached 51% share in China and 9% of all internet searches.  This rapid growth is based on two factors:

1) Migration from Google China to Baidu.  As of June, Baidu surpassed Google as the number one search engine in China.
2) Rapid growth in the number of Chinese internet users.

HitsLink - Tips and Tricks

Is there a way for me to filter or sort the data for a particular report?
A majority of reports within HitsLink support custom filters. To add a filter to a report, hover over the relevant column heading and select 'Add Filter'. This will bring up an interface for adding the custom filter of your choosing. Current filters will appear at the top of the report, above the graphic if applicable. To remove a filter, click the 'Clear' link located next to the filter name. (Please note: If the 'Add Filter' option does not appear for the column heading you have selected, it means that filters are not supported for the data in that column.)

Can Hitslink track the amount of traffic and/or conversions I get via my email campaign?
Absolutely! Campaign and eCommerce tracking is one of the main features of the Enterprise version of the HitsLink product. Tracking traffic and conversion generated by an email campaign is as simple as adding a parameter onto the end of your web address. Instead of the link within the email directing to www.yoursite.com, you would have it point to www.yoursite.com?source=EmailCampaign1 (where EmailCampaign1 is any identifying name you choose.) Anytime a visitor accesses your site via this custom link, their visit will be tracked under 'Campaign Activity' and the campaign name you choose.
